- Hear it through at Slow (58 bpm). Open it in the reader, choose Slow, and follow the page with your eyes without playing. As it plays, count 4 to the bar.

Bredon Hill is a song by George Butterworth (1885 to 1916), from Bredon Hill and Other Songs, to words by Alfred Edward Housman. It was written for voice and piano; here the singer's tune is folded into the top of the right hand, over the piano's own part, so one player gives the whole song. The first verse of the English words sits under the tune.
How to play it
Let the tune sing out on top of the right hand and keep the notes under it lighter, as a singer would be heard over the piano. Where the voice rests, the introductions and interludes are exactly as the composer wrote them.

Who George Butterworth was
English composer who collected folk songs with Cecil Sharp and wrote settings of A. E. Housman's A Shropshire Lad. He was killed at the Battle of the Somme at thirty-one. His small body of work is much loved.
