About this piece
When I with pleasing wonder stand (LANGDON) is a psalm tune by Hezekiah Moors, who lived from 1775 to 1814, and it was printed in 1809 in The Province Harmony. Words by Isaac Watts, 1719, paraphrase of Psalm 139, Part 2, with five stanzas. Here the choir's four parts are set on two staves for piano, soprano and alto in the right hand and tenor and bass in the left. As in the old American tunebooks, the tune itself is sung by the tenors, so listen for it in the upper line of the left hand.
How to play it
Play it as four singers rather than as chords: let the top line sing, keep the bass steady, and move the inner voices smoothly. It sits in a minor key, so let the darker colour come through without slowing down.
