- Learn the left hand of the same bars on its own. Keep it quiet and even: it is the floor the tune stands on.
- Put hands together at Slow, 40 bpm. Bars 1 to 8 only. Stop after every wrong note and play that bar again before moving on.
- Move up to Steady (60 bpm) once Slow feels easy three times in a row. Then learn the next 8 bars the same way: right hand, left hand, together.
- Play the whole piece (under a minute) from the start, at whatever speed keeps it going. A steady run with a few slips beats a fast one that stops.
About this piece
O weigh me, Lord, in equal scale is a hymn tune by Samuel Arnold, who lived from 1740 to 1802, and it was printed in 1794 in Improved Psalmody. This setting of James Merrick's metrical version of Psalm 43 was published in 1794. Here the choir's three parts are set on two staves for piano, the two upper voices in the right hand and the bass in the left.
How to play it
Three voices share two hands here, so keep the lone line in one hand as smooth and singing as the pair in the other. It sits in a minor key, so let the darker colour come through without slowing down.
