About this piece
The English Hymnal of 1906 sets O happy day, when first was poured as hymn 36 to the tune Das Walt’ Gott Vater; the hymnal's own credit reads: Melody by D. Vetter, c. 1713. Adapted and harmonized by J. S. Bach. The four-part harmony is printed as the hymnal gives it, soprano and alto in the right hand and tenor and bass in the left.
How to play it
Play it as a choir sings it: the tune on top of the right hand with the alto under it, tenor and bass in the left. Count 4/2 steadily and change each chord together on the beat.

Who Vetter was
German organist who played at St. Nicholas Church in Leipzig for over forty years. His collection Musicalische Kirch- und Haus-Ergötzlichkeit gave organists and households simple chorale settings with variations. Bach later built a cantata on one of his hymn melodies.
