About this piece
Als Jesus Christus in der Nacht is a chorale by Johann Crüger, who lived from 1598 to 1662, and it was printed in 1649 in Vierstimmige Choralgesänge. The words are by Johann Heermann. Here the choir's four parts are set on two staves for piano, soprano and alto in the right hand and tenor and bass in the left.
How to play it
Play it as four singers rather than as chords: let the top line sing, keep the bass steady, and move the inner voices smoothly. Choose a calm tempo you can hold from the first bar to the last, and breathe at the ends of the phrases.
