- Hear it through at Slow (75 bpm). Open it in the reader, choose Slow, and follow the page with your eyes without playing. As it plays, count 6 to the bar.
- Learn the right hand of bars 1 to 8 on its own, in F major. Say the note names out loud the first time through, then play it three times without stopping.
- Find the chords under it: F6, B♭, F and C. Play each one as a block in your left hand and say its name, so you know what the harmony is before the left hand has to move.
- Learn the left hand of the same bars on its own. Keep it quiet and even: it is the floor the tune stands on.

About this piece
Mercy, O thou son of David (BARTIMEUS) is a hymn tune by Amos Pilsbury, who lived from 1772 to 1812, and it was printed in 1799 in The United States Sacred Harmony. A folk hymn, first published by Amos Pilsbury as Charleston in 1799, deriving from earlier oral or manuscript sources (Jackson 1953b, No. 80; David Music 1995-2005). Here the choir's four parts are set on two staves for piano, soprano and alto in the right hand and tenor and bass in the left. As in the old American tunebooks, the tune itself is sung by the tenors, so listen for it in the upper line of the left hand.
How to play it
Play it as four singers rather than as chords: let the top line sing, keep the bass steady, and move the inner voices smoothly. Feel two broad beats in each bar, not six small ones.
