French pianist who toured Europe as a child prodigy with his brother, was noticed by the critic Fétis, and settled into a career of teaching and writing studies that ran to several hundred pieces. He is one of a small group of composers, with Czerny and Duvernoy and Burgmüller, whose names survive entirely on the strength of exercises: music written to build a hand rather than to be admired, and admired anyway by anyone who has had to build one.
