Russian chemist who did serious work on aldehydes, held a professorship, founded a medical school for women, and composed on Sundays and holidays, which is why his friends called him the Sunday composer. He left an opera unfinished at his death and it had to be completed by Rimsky-Korsakov and Glazunov. The Polovtsian Dances from it became a Broadway hit song seventy years later, which would have astonished him less than the fact that anyone remembers the chemistry at all.
