French composer who spent eighteen years as a civil servant at the Ministry of the Interior, wrote music in the evenings, and only gave up the job at thirty-nine after hearing Tristan in Munich and weeping through the prelude. España came out of a holiday in Spain and made him famous. Ravel said he owed him more than anyone, Poulenc adored him, and Debussy borrowed from him quietly; among French composers he is the one other composers keep pointing at.
