French composer who did for ballet what his contemporaries were doing for opera: made the music matter as much as the dancing. Tchaikovsky admired Coppélia and Sylvia openly and said Sylvia was better than his own Swan Lake, which is an unusual thing for a composer to write down. The Flower Duet from Lakmé is now so thoroughly attached to an airline advertisement that its own opera has become the footnote.
