Viennese publisher and composer who did two things worth remembering: he printed a great deal of Schubert, most of it while Schubert was alive and broke, and in 1819 he sent a little waltz of his own to fifty composers, asking each for one variation to publish as a set. Nearly all of them obliged with a single piece. Beethoven ignored the request, then came back four years later with thirty-three variations that take the tune apart and rebuild it as one of the largest works ever written for the piano. Diabelli published those too.
