About this piece
William Howard Doane wrote this gospel hymn tune in 1869 for Fanny Crosby's words 'Jesus, keep me near the cross', and it has been sung in churches ever since. The sung melody sits in the right hand over the harmony, in a broad 6/4 of long and short steps.
How to play it
Hold the lower notes in the right hand for their full length while the tune moves above them. Feel two big beats per bar so the hymn keeps walking.
