- Hear it through at Slow (35 bpm). Open it in the reader, choose Slow, and follow the page with your eyes without playing. As it plays, count 2 to the bar.
- Learn the right hand of bars 1 to 8 on its own, in E major. Say the note names out loud the first time through, then play it three times without stopping.
- Find the chords under it: E, F♯m7, B7 and Emaj7. Play each one as a block in your left hand and say its name, so you know what the harmony is before the left hand has to move.
- Learn the left hand of the same bars on its own. Keep it quiet and even: it is the floor the tune stands on.
- Put hands together at Slow, 35 bpm. Bars 1 to 8 only. Stop after every wrong note and play that bar again before moving on.
- Move up to Steady (52 bpm) once Slow feels easy three times in a row. Then learn the next 8 bars the same way: right hand, left hand, together.
- Play the whole piece (about 3 minutes) from the start, at whatever speed keeps it going. A steady run with a few slips beats a fast one that stops.
About this piece
Elgar wrote it as an engagement present for Caroline Alice Roberts, who had given up a great deal to marry a music teacher with no money. He sold the rights for two pounds and it became a hit that earned him nothing.

Keep it affectionate rather than grand, and let the tune be simple; the piece is a gift, not a statement.

Who Elgar was
English composer, almost entirely self-taught in an era when that alone made him an outsider to Britain's musical establishment, who became the first English composer in over two centuries to earn international standing to rival the Germans. The Enigma Variations, each movement a musical portrait of one of his friends, made his reputation overnight in 1899; the Cello Concerto, written in the shadow of the First World War, is now one of the most performed works for the instrument. His Pomp and Circumstance March No. 1, written as a concert piece, has since become inescapable at graduation ceremonies worldwide, a fate he reportedly found faintly bemusing.
