New Orleans-born pianist who took the Creole and Caribbean rhythms he heard as a child in Congo Square, put them into concert pieces, and became the first American musician to be a genuine international star. Chopin heard him play in Paris at fifteen and predicted exactly that. He toured obsessively, through the Caribbean and South America, playing monster concerts with dozens of pianos, and collapsed on stage in Rio at forty, dying weeks later. Half a century before ragtime was published, his music already syncopates.
