French composer who twice came close to abandoning music for the priesthood, and who wrote an Ave Maria by laying a melody over the top of Bach's first prelude, which is either a small act of vandalism or one of the more inspired pieces of arrangement in the repertoire, depending on who you ask. His Faust was the most performed opera in the world for a good part of the nineteenth century. The Funeral March of a Marionette is now better known as the theme to Alfred Hitchcock Presents.
