Spanish composer and pianist whose Goyescas are piano pieces built out of Goya's paintings, full of the guitar figures and dance rhythms of a Spain he was helping to put into concert music. In 1916 he crossed the Atlantic for the opera version's premiere in New York, and on the way home his ship was torpedoed in the English Channel. He had reached a lifeboat; he saw his wife still in the water, went back for her, and both drowned.
