Hungarian pianist who set out to be a touring virtuoso, collapsed from exhaustion at seventeen, and instead settled in Paris for the rest of his life among friends who included Berlioz, Chopin and Liszt. Schumann admired his writing enough to review it warmly in print, and the studies he left are unusual in the teaching repertoire for being genuinely poetic: they teach a hand something while sounding like pieces somebody wanted to write. He outlived nearly all of that circle and died largely forgotten.
