Bohemian pianist who copied out Beethoven's Fidelio under the composer's own supervision as a young man, and who spent the rest of a long career as one of the most respected players and teachers in Europe. He taught Mendelssohn, refused to take a fee for it, and later followed him to run the piano department at the Leipzig Conservatory. His studies are still set for students, and his diaries are one of the better first-hand accounts anybody left of what Beethoven was actually like to be around.
