Brazilian pianist who wrote tangos brasileiros that are really the beginnings of choro, and who spent years playing in the waiting room of a Rio cinema and in the salons of music shops, where audiences came to hear him rather than to buy. Darius Milhaud sought him out; Villa-Lobos said he was the true incarnation of the Brazilian soul. His music sits exactly where the European salon piece meets Brazilian dance rhythm, and it is far harder to play well than it sounds.
