Italian composer who understood better than almost anyone how to make an audience cry on cue, and was sniffed at for it by critics for a century afterwards. La Bohème, Tosca and Madama Butterfly have never left the repertoire. He was a car enthusiast, nearly died in a crash in 1903, and worked on Turandot for four years before throat cancer killed him with the last duet unwritten. At the premiere, Toscanini stopped the orchestra where Puccini had stopped and told the audience so.
