French prodigy who could read and write by two, gave his first concert at ten, and offered as an encore any of Beethoven's thirty-two sonatas the audience cared to name, from memory. He wrote fluently in every form for seventy years, and refused for almost all of them to let The Carnival of the Animals be published, on the grounds that a joke would damage his reputation as a serious composer. He allowed one movement out: The Swan. The rest appeared the year after he died and is the only thing many people know of him.
