- Learn the right hand of bars 1 to 8 on its own, in D minor. Say the note names out loud the first time through, then play it three times without stopping.
- Learn the left hand of the same bars on its own. Keep it quiet and even: it is the floor the tune stands on.
- Put hands together at Slow, 47 bpm. Bars 1 to 8 only. Stop after every wrong note and play that bar again before moving on.
- Move up to Steady (71 bpm) once Slow feels easy three times in a row. Then learn the next 8 bars the same way: right hand, left hand, together.

About this piece
A compact prelude of only 19 bars by Scheidemann, arranged for piano from the organ original. It is written without a flat in the signature, in the old Dorian manner, though B flats appear throughout. It opens on a full D major chord and ends on one too, with short running figures passed between the voices in between.
How to play it
Start by placing the opening chord with all four notes together, then let the running semiquavers flow from it without rushing. The piece is short enough to learn in two or three sittings, so aim for a smooth, unbroken performance.

Who Scheidemann was
German organist and composer who studied with Sweelinck in Amsterdam and then played at St. Catherine's Church in Hamburg for forty years. He was one of the founders of the North German organ school. Reincken, his pupil, succeeded him.
