German composer who gave Romantic opera its founding work in Der Freischütz, with a scene set in a haunted forest that audiences of 1821 found genuinely frightening, and who wrote for the piano with a hand so wide it could reach a tenth and play a melody inside it. His Invitation to the Dance is the first concert waltz, a piece of dance music written to be listened to rather than danced. He died in London at thirty-nine, of tuberculosis he knew he had, having travelled there against medical advice to conduct.
