- Hear it through at Slow (35 bpm). Open it in the reader, choose Slow, and follow the page with your eyes without playing. As it plays, count 4 to the bar.
- Learn the right hand of bars 1 to 8 on its own, in G major. Say the note names out loud the first time through, then play it three times without stopping.
- Find the chords under it: Gmaj7, Em7, D7 and G. Play each one as a block in your left hand and say its name, so you know what the harmony is before the left hand has to move.
- Learn the left hand of the same bars on its own. Keep it quiet and even: it is the floor the tune stands on.

About this piece
A tune from Christian Friedrich Witt's German hymnbook Psalmodia sacra of 1715, sung today above all to Charles Wesley's Advent hymn 'Come, thou long-expected Jesus'. It is arranged for piano from the choir original, a sturdy nine-bar 4/4 whose melody climbs from D to a high E.
How to play it
Play it firmly and in strict time, one chord to each beat. Keep the bass line strong, since it drives the harmony forward.
