- Hear it through at Slow (38 bpm). Open it in the reader, choose Slow, and follow the page with your eyes without playing. As it plays, count 4 to the bar.
- Learn the right hand of bars 1 to 8 on its own, in A♭ major. Say the note names out loud the first time through, then play it three times without stopping.
- Learn the left hand of the same bars on its own. Keep it quiet and even: it is the floor the tune stands on.
- Put hands together at Slow, 38 bpm. Bars 1 to 8 only. Stop after every wrong note and play that bar again before moving on.
- Move up to Steady (56 bpm) once Slow feels easy three times in a row. Then learn the next 8 bars the same way: right hand, left hand, together.
- Play the whole piece (under a minute) from the start, at whatever speed keeps it going. A steady run with a few slips beats a fast one that stops.
About this piece
An orphan's lament, a folk melody from the Palatinate arranged by Max Bruch for the German folk-song collection for mixed choir published by Peters in 1915. It is arranged for piano from the choir original, marked Langsam, and the last line repeats its words with a lingering extra phrase.
How to play it
Play slowly and let the tune sing over quiet lower voices. At the repeated closing words, soften further rather than louder.

Who Bruch was
German composer and teacher best known for his first Violin Concerto in G minor and Kol Nidrei for cello. He wrote a great deal of choral music and was a respected conductor. He sold the rights to his most famous concerto early on and hardly profited from its success.
