About this piece

A harpsichord piece from the book of Pièces de clavecin that Rameau published in 1724. The title means 'tender laments', and it is a rondeau: a gentle refrain in D minor that returns between contrasting couplets.

How to play it

Play the refrain with a singing legato and a slight lean on each first beat. Keep the ornaments light and on the beat, as a harpsichordist would.

Reading it, and printing it

The score opens in Artform's reader, which shows the music as engraved notation and plays it back so you can hear the line before you try it. You can slow the tempo down, loop a passage that is not working yet, and print the page when you would rather have paper on the stand.

The file itself is MusicXML, which MuseScore, Sibelius, Finale and Dorico all open, so the notes are yours to keep whatever you read them in.

Edition: Mutopia Project #414, in the public domain. Converted to MusicXML by Artform and checked note for note against the original.

Who Rameau was

French Baroque composer and music theorist who came to composing relatively late, in his forties, after first making his name as a theorist: his Treatise on Harmony, published in 1722, laid out the basic logic of chords, roots, and inversions still taught in music theory classes today. Once he did turn to writing operas and a large body of harpsichord music, his harmonic daring, unusual for the period, caused real controversy among audiences used to gentler, more conservative French taste.

Learn the music behind it

Reading a piece and understanding it are different skills. If you want the harmony under this one, the chord trainer teaches chords the way songs use them, and the scale pages cover the fingering for every key, including D minor.
