Who Rameau was
French Baroque composer and music theorist who came to composing relatively late, in his forties, after first making his name as a theorist: his Treatise on Harmony, published in 1722, laid out the basic logic of chords, roots, and inversions still taught in music theory classes today. Once he did turn to writing operas and a large body of harpsichord music, his harmonic daring, unusual for the period, caused real controversy among audiences used to gentler, more conservative French taste.
